Relax and Unwind Massage

Interview #46 - Relax and Unwind Massage

Welcome back to another business this week here at Business Anthropi. I hope that you all enjoyed the read last week and cannot wait for you to read about what I have in store this week.

For this week, please sit back and relax while learning about the business Relax and Unwind Massage. This is the first business I have gotten to interview that is concerned with massage and beauty therapy so it was really interesting chatting with the owner, Tegan and finding out more about her business and what she does.

MEET TEGAN!

Tegan is the owner and founder behind her sole business, aiming to provide her clients with a relaxing and pampering experience that enhance your health and wellbeing for the long term. Tegan has been successfully running her business for six years, and along with this, she is also a loving mother and everything else that comes along with it.

While speaking with Tegan, she has a bright, warm personality which I can see also translates into her business.

At the time of starting Relax and Unwind, Tegan had her first child and was struggling to get back into the workforce, but she still had the ambition to give back to people, and as a young mum, she found her calling through massage. Through studying massage, she realised how beneficial it is to the body, and individuals self-care and wellbeing.

Since then, Tegan has been able to turn what she loves into working for herself and creating the business that stands today. Since the beginning, even while studying, she only ever wanted to have a business structure that was female-oriented. From this progression, the beauty therapy side of things kicked into action.

Is there an intended experience that you want your clients to have?

“I just want them to feel relaxed. I finish every massage whether it be relaxation or remedial with a head and face massage, purely because even after you have had a deep tissue or remedial massage, it’s nice to relax and feel that bliss. I want everyone to feel that they have felt that they have left the world for an hour and then coming back into reality.”

Going along for the ride, Tegan's husband Matt is by her side every step of the way, Tegan has always got that someone to rely on, and for her, it was Matt that told her to stop making excuses and to start the business.

With all the support she receives, this has allowed for Tegan to offer both one on one services as well as group therapy sessions. As her business will enable her to be very flexible with scheduling, it has allowed her to expand and with a new goal to create a studio on her new property.

And now that she has been running her business for six years, Tegan can't see herself doing anything else other than massage. Massage therapy not only is beneficial to the client on the receiving end but for Tegan, it stops and grounds her so, during this time when massage therapy is limited, this is something she misses and enjoys about her work.

Over the course of the six years, there have been many highlights that Tegan has wished to share, and this is what truly makes her business worthwhile. Not only is it the fact that her business allows for her to spend quality time with her family and to be flexible around school holidays, but she also loves when someone gets off her table feeling so relaxed and memorable afterwards.

What tips would you give to someone wanting to pursue massage or beauty therapy?

“Just do it. Find a course or a place where you feel like you have got trust and faith in because I think that’s really important and then just do it. Life’s too short to do something you don’t love so I find massage and beauty are really rewarding and the people you get to meet and the friendships that I have made from it with the clients and the places it has taken me has been amazing.”

For me, both as a writer and a consumer of many sorts, I think it’s impressive to see all these fantastic business owners giving excellent advice which I highly suggest everyone take on board. For someone like myself who hadn’t considered before meeting Tegan what goes into the skills and specialities of becoming a masseuse, it’s both intriguing and exciting to see all the pathways someone can take.

Tegan has been in the industry for over six years, including her time studying, and she has since been able to develop her business and herself into what it is today, allowing for it to be different and unique from everyone else in the market.

What makes Relax and Unwind unique from other boutiques out there, is that Tegan does take pride and care, not only in her services but also to the client. Where most businesses, the transaction ends at the end of the use or sale, but for Tegan, she will go the extra mile to send a message to a client whom she knows kids are sick or if they have a birthday.

By being on that personal level, that’s what makes a world of difference, they are not just someone else paying money for a massage but rather a human being that Tegan allows herself to get to know.

However, similarity to other business owners, especially now, Tegan has had to face many challenges down the road, sometimes covered in doubt. One of her most significant obstacles to overcome was the move down from the Peninsula to Kinglake. This wasn’t easy as she lost all her clients and practically had to start again from scratch. So this pushed the limits out of her comfort zone, but Tegan didn’t let that minor setback stop her from achieving success.

To continually challenge is to learn continuously, and so even though there will always be challenges and doubt in business, it’s essential to have someone there beside you that cuts all that out and helps you through. As a sole business owner, Tegan works for herself, and there is no one else to do the work, but by building relationships and the continuous motivation is essential to keep any business on its toes.

How would you describe your business in one sentence?

Satisfying, my business is so satisfying knowing that you have helped someone, helped them take some time out for themselves to recharge, or helped them fix that sore neck that’s limiting what they can do.

It’s so satisfying knowing that something so small that I can do can help someone.
