Interview #48 - Pellekare

Good evening everyone and welcome back to another blog post featuring another outstanding, inspirational business! Can you believe that there are only three months left of the year, it’s crazy, the year has gone by so fast. For this week’s business, I would like to introduce the business Pellekare, a homemade skincare business that aims to specialise in 100% organic, natural, Australian sourced and gender-neutral products.

For this interview, this is the first business I have written about where there are three co-owners, all bringing essential knowledge and their love of skincare to everyone who buys from them. Pellekare is a relatively new business, having opened up this year in March whereby sitting around at home for them was that kick they needed to get this adventure going.

MEET POOJA, ARUBA and HIMASHA!

Pooja, Aruba and Himasha are all close friends wanting to provide a better skincare alternative for everyone, moving away from stereotypical concerns about who can use skincare products. They wish to provide everyone with a natural and organic product with handmade and homemade recipes for said products which have been passed down from generation to generation.

Like many this year, staying indoors can be quite dull, and with limited options to go outdoors, you could almost see a trend where everyone wanted to better themselves and focus on specific aspects in their life. This was the case for Pooja, Aruba and Himasha. Being bored and tired of lockdown, they all started focusing more and taking better care of their skin, especially. And so, they started experimenting with different skin care recipes that they were taught, from there the spontaneous decision was made for sharing this with the world and creating the business you see today.

One of the beneficial things that I see when there are three owners to a business is that there is that shared workload and also differences in knowledge about certain aspects of the business. Take Pellekare, as they are all currently studying, they have aspects like marketing and communications, IT and Finance covered, so in terms of technical aspects, they have all bases covered. Like most new businesses, everything is a learning experience, and all three of them are continually learning as they go.

What would you say is the most important thing to look out for when choosing a skincare brand?

“I think the ingredients that go into skincare products is the most important. Like you have different skin types and skin concerns so everything that goes out needs to make the habit of looking at the labels and proactively choosing the ones that contain fewer chemicals and preservatives.”

With the many skincare brands out there, what Pellekare hopes to achieve through their business, products and ethos is providing organic Skincare that is right for the skin. They know and have the confidence when someone uses their products for the first time, it’s going to stick with them, knowing that it’s not harming you or the environment. Being students as well, they understand how tight money can get, especially if you are someone always buying big brand names, so in this sense, one of the main aspects they like to get across is affordability for quality skincare.

The Skincare industry, especially in terms of small startups can be very saturated, so it’s essential to have a unique selling point to stand out, and Pellekare is continuously adapting and continuously changing for the better.

It’s crucial to Pooja, Aruba and Himasha that the integrity of their recipes are maintained. Given they have been passed down from generation to generation, originating in India with natural ingredients, this is a massive part of their business. Before launching any new product, given the sensitivity that Skincare holds, significant tests and trials are conducted, so they know that what they have worked and that people are benefiting from its results.

I loved talking with Pooja, Aruba and Himasha and learning more about their business. It’s impressive to see so many businesses starting up this year despite the odds and succeeding. Skincare can be a tricky area to navigate, especially as it can be quite sensitive in terms of products and whether people will want to buy something new but I think Pellekare has done a fantastic job so far. Even just by looking at their name, Pelle translates to skin in Italian, so their name is essentially Skincare with a twist!

I have gotten back into looking after my skin, especially with warmer weather coming, so when I asked all three what their favourite products are I had to know. SPF, Rose Water, Body Butter and their Glowing Face Pack were amongst the favourites that they all enjoy and swear by using.

With the inspiration to start the business one night and make something for themselves, since that night, they have taken it on a step by step basis, coming up with so many recipes and ideas everything started falling into place.

What tips would you give to new business owners wanting to jump-start their idea?

“It’s quite scary but I think you just need to have a little bit of faith in yourself but it then actually turns out to be nice. We are all enjoying the journey because every single time we are learning so much and it’s all pretty exciting.”

“The community support as well, especially from the small business community, we receive a lot of love and support from everyone. So as scary as it is, we know that there will be quite a few people that will support you along the way, so just take that leap of faith.”

“And also having a very good support system matters as well to help stay organised and to go through it all together as one is really important. Because we are also doing our studies and Masters simultaneously, so we also have to go through that, so it’s important to have those people around you and have that balance.”

For Pellekare, it’s imperative to them that skincare can be normalised for the whole community, as well as making it an essential factor in day to day life. Still being a relatively new business, Pooja, Aruba, and Himasha have all had to face the challenges that not only come with starting a new business but also for this year as well. Considering that the whole situation doesn’t work in favour of them running a business, especially when sourcing ingredients and getting deliveries out, this hasn’t let them stop doing what they love. Like all businesses that are trying to stay afloat, it’s essential to keep going, and if you love what you do, everything will work out in the end.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Pellekare and where they decide to take their business further!

How would you describe your business in one sentence?
