Daylesford Grazing

Interview #28 - Daylesford Grazing

Welcome back to my blog and for tuning in for yet another week and for another business and their story. During these times, even though as a blogger myself I am not personally affected but I know many businesses are becoming affected and losing work as a result. In saying this, It is now imperative that we all support each other and continue to help businesses grow so when this is all over, everything can go somewhat back to normal.

So in saying this, if you are reading this now and are the owner of a business or know someone who has a business that is struggling, get in touch with me so I can help you out! Let me share your story and let everyone know what your drive and passion is for your business, to let people know that you’re still here.

Now let’s get onto the business of this week. I was grateful to have had the change to speak to the owner of Daylesford Grazing and am able to now share with you all their story of the business. Located in Daylesford, North-West of the city of Melbourne, this grazing table business strives in the countryside, having access to many local farmers that make the produce and products used very sustainable and flavourful. This business is able to share and commemorate the local produce and share practises of sustainable farming to share the passion for food and inspire people to buy and source locally from the land.

MEET LEAH!

Leah is the owner and creator behind Daylesford Grazing. Starting the business only very recently in November of 2019, she has since made a name for herself, providing her community and surrounding areas with locally sourced, sustainable and ethical produce that she showcases within the grazing tables and boxes. It’s important to Leah that both herself and her customers know exactly where the produce comes from and in saying this, ensuring that they are being sustainable in their practices which is something that they strive themselves upon. Being sustainable is part of both the company and a way of life.

This was also the main goal and intention she had when she initially created the business, which was to be sustainable as well as a representation of what the Daylesford area has to offer. The area of Daylesford is surrounded by farmland and is beautiful to visit, this, in turn, has a lot of farmers producing local produce. What Leah noticed was that in her area at least, there was a gap in the market for this kind of business and realised that you can both have a product that’s sustainable and both styled extravagantly. Given that Leah is still new to the business game, there is much to learn and so far, she has since achieved this goal and I’m sure that the future will be promising with new insights and goals to come.

At the beginning of Leah’s business journey, she did a little research, predominantly focusing on grazing and catering businesses to get insight into what they do. Mainly Melbourne based businesses, Leah was able to see what others currently provide and as well as researching other businesses, colour schemes and aesthetics was also something that was of interest. With this research, this also helped with the initial development of the concept that Leah wanted to achieve and where this originated from for her business.

The style that Leah has developed for her business allows for more flat grazing tables which are not only in her opinion, easier but also fun as it allows for more props for the aesthetic that she has been able to enhance. With trials being done beforehand for a variety of aspects, what she has now developed and what you see is the final product. But in saying this, everything is always working progress and everything will always continue to develop.

I find this with every other business I have interviewed, that seeing them now after I have written about them, they are always adapting, changing and moving with the times. I find that it’s crucial for businesses to change and adapt to the times, this allows for more customers to find them but also get an advantage and standpoint for a point of difference.

With any business, there is always going to be ups and downs to each milestone they go through, everyone will have their doubts and troubles and even with Leah, she felt the same. There was a sense of doubt before going into the business back in November but that didn’t let her stop what she was doing. Turning a passion into a profitable business which she can now put her full energy into. Even with the doubt before starting, that won’t beat the best part of the business for Leah, seeing her customers faces and reactions, and everyone else at the event, after the finished product is laid out in front of them for everyone to enjoy.

What tips would you give to someone starting their own business?

“I think it would be to make sure you get a really good website and to also make sure that you take the time and really do your research about what you want your business to be. It’s also important that you take the time to have good photos and build up your social media to get your brand out there. But personally, I think SEO is important, especially for your website to maintain performance and also reaching out to other people to help get your brand and website out there such as blogs”.

For Leah, she wants her grazing table business to be seamless when she provides to customers and has an intended experience that she aims to achieve each time with every job that she does. It’s important that everything is perfect and to standard because she is assisting in someone’s special day and it will be something that they will indeed remember. Not only this, and the fact that she is able to bring joy and something that is stress-free, but her inspiration behind the business also assists in what she can achieve and the look she is going for.

Her main inspiration behind her designs and creations goes back to the times of Kings and Queens, during the 1800s, where there would be big, beautiful castles having long tables of food upon food. Taking this style with her long, flat grazing tables and also the colour aesthetic with elegant and royalty like hues, there is this vibe that both the photos and the tables itself gives off. Now, Leah is also moving into more colourful, peachy tones that also compliments what she previously had.

Given that there are so many grazing table businesses out there, another of which I have interviewed for my blog, being unique and different is imperative to any businesses success. For Leah and her business, it’s mainly the produce that she uses and how she incorporates sustainability into almost every aspect of her business. This is the key driver that makes her stand out from everyone else. From her research, she hasn’t found other businesses in her field that is sustainable as she is and provides so much variety in terms of organic ingredients. Leah also provides her customers with the opportunity to have compostable dinnerware that goes along with her tables. With just small steps, Leah and her business are taking small steps to help reduce the impact of waste has on the environment. With everything coming from the Daylesford area, she has managed to develop a unique relationship with her suppliers with even some ingredients like the olives coming from literally down the road! From supporting local farmers and showcasing their produce, to donating money to charities every month to help in the business community, there is nothing stopping Leah on her path to success.

How would you describe your business in one sentence?
